Research in the Raw: Ian Campbell In-Person

Science fiction is more than just spaceships and death rays: it has a long and robust tradition of social critique. When we read about Martians, we're reading about ourselves. This is especially true in the Arab world, where few people have the opportunity to make a direct critique of their own societies without fear of repercussions. How does science fiction in Arabic differ from its Western counterpart? Dr. Ian Campbell will share a reading of a text available in English translation.

Ian Campbell is Associate Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature in the World Languages & Cultures department here at GSU. His primary research interest is Arabic-language science fiction; in 2018, he published a monograph on the development of the genre within Arabic literature, including close readings of formative texts.

Research in the Raw is a speaker series to introduce the broader Georgia State University community to research being conducted by faculty on the Georgia State University campus.
