SUMMARY:Teaching with Librarians: Using APA PsycINFO and the PICO Framework in Education Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Denise Dimsdale (Library) and Dr. Sarah Carlson
(CEHD)\n\n \n\nDenise Dimsdale\, Education Librarian and Dr. Sarah
Carlson\, Assistant Professor in the College of Education and Human
Development’s Learning Sciences department\, will discuss how they
developed two classroom activities to help students with choosing a
topic for working on annotated bibliography and literature review
assignments. \n\n \n\nThe first activity involves a unique approach to
using the APA Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms within the APA
PsycINFO database to identify available topics\, and how to narrow down
topic searches to obtain a more doable list of results (e.g.\, using
filters). The second classroom activity involves using a modified version
 of the PICO (Population\, Intervention/Investigation\, Comparison\,
Outcome) framework to guide students for narrowing down their topics of
interest even further\, thinking of how to group their topics of interest
into subtopics. Each will be presented with an example and student
feedback.\n\n \n\nTeaching with Librarians is a new series of talks
spotlighting faculty/librarian teaching partnerships across the GSU
campuses\, aimed at faculty and graduate student instructors and library
staff interested in instruction. Each informal session features a team of
librarians/archivists and faculty discussing their specific teaching
 collaboration -- their planning\, processes\, obstacles\, and successes --
with time for audience questions\, conversation\, and brainstorming. By
highlighting creative possibilities for course-based instruction\, we hope
to inspire and encourage instructors to consider new possibilities for
teaching with librarians.\n\n \n\nThis talk will be recorded and a link to
the recording will be available as soon as possible.
